6D classroom

6D classroom

January 5th, 2005

School is going well. I’ve actually only taught 2 classes so far. There are lots of problems with my schedule. The kids aren’t there, there’s another teacher in the room already, etc. This is where the patience part of the PCV experience kicks in, I guess. The 2 classes I did teach were f-u-n! I like the middle school age a lot. We practiced classroom commands simon-says style (stand up, sit down, etc) and I taught them the alphabet song. We had a good time. They love any kind of little contest here, so I had volunteers stand up and sing by themselves. When I solemnly and respectfully shook hands with the girl who did the best, the class died laughing. They’re easily amused and it’s great.

I was sitting here at my little desk just now reading that inspirational quote book that Molly gave me. I know it’s corny, but it really has helped me so much in the hard moments. Anyway, this quote really struck me, “You may have a fresh start at any moment you choose, for this thing we call ‘failure’ is not the falling down, but the staying down.” – Mary Pickford

The weather is really weird here today. The wind is really strong and it’s kicked up so much dust that the sky is brown and you can see the perfect circle of the sun. People say it will be like this until February. It’s kind of a nice break from blue skies and pleasant sunshine.

It’s Thursday now and it is cold. The sky is completely brown/gray and there’s this cold, strong, constant wind. It looks like there’s fog but it’s all dust. I wore my black teacher sweater to school and its gray with dust. There’s a layer of fine gray dust over everything in my house.
